1. How’s the snow at the nearest skiing area?
2. How is it called?
3. Do they allow unsophisticated, rebelious, and stupid oafs snowboarders like myself?
4. How long do you reckon the season is gonna last?
It’s been a couple of years since I clamp a
snowboard
and I really wanna go one day, shamefully my uni schedule is quite tight and I won’t get any significant time off until spring break.
I thought seriously about looking for resorts in Chile and Argentina, where the season lasts from June to late August, but those tend to be hilariously expensive, far away, and small... Since I don't actually own a board getting a rental one over there might be a problem too.

Snow up in pnw is really great late season.

I mean, A-basin will probably be open until at least June, but it won’t be great then. Southwest CO is getting SMOTHERED right now so I expect wolf creek and purgatory will have a good season.
(Edited to add, many if not most resorts in CO have closing dates determined by the Forest Service, so they’ll close before snow is gone...occasionally they get permission to reopen for weekends when the snow season is excessive)

I wouldn’t be able to go anywhere
until mid April which is what I'm most worried about.... might be a long shot in most resorts

Seriously... June? That sounds amazing!

Tahoe is getting buried this year. Squaw will likely be open until July 4th. On site rentals as well.

Whistler. Go world class.

Ah I had a lot of fun the last time I went, but they weren't having a lot of snow... how is it this season?

Man, this sounds like the season is gonna be
lot better than I thought....

Skiing is great in Montana. However our resort closes on April 7. I would go to mount hood, mammoth or even Tahoe resorts as they have a crap ton of snow and will be open into July.

Yeah, that's a week before the only break I have that's long enough to go.

Pretty ok from what I hear

The season in Whistler isn’t particularly long though, is it?

Tahoe is pretty amazing. Great views and California vibes.

The PNW has gotten pounded. We’ll have snow into March and April for Hood and Baker. Snowboarding is equal to skiing here. If you practice good etiquette you’ll be fine.
![]() 02/26/2019 at 20:44 |

It’s gone into early July a few times since I moved out here. The snow at that point is like peak season in Virginia (so crap, and either slushy or icy, but it’s what I grew up with so it’s cool!)

Boooooooo Vail Resorts.
(But I did used to love it there)

PNW Oppo meet is going.... ;)

It means that snow is gonna be just fine if I were to go in mid April....

I saw the map of the trails
and it doesn’t seem very beginner friendly. I don’t have much issue with that, but my would be fellow travelers might...
I could also just not tell them...
![]() 02/26/2019 at 20:48 |

I suppose good etiquette means not crossing across the run doing giant S' like beginners?

I went to Vail twice... if it weren’t so crowded it’d be awesome... Vail must be one of the biggest, most diverse
resorts I remember visiting.
Since I’m not a local I’m not particularly well versed in off piste, so following groomers is easier...
![]() 02/26/2019 at 20:50 |

Nah. If you’re not cutting people off and staying in you’re lane you’ll be good

North Star and heavenly are easy. That’s my opinion, compared to my home mountain

Come up to Mammoth, it's probably not that far of a drive for you. Certainly the closest within driveable distance to you. Tons and tons of snow, will be open till 4th of July at least.
![]() 02/26/2019 at 20:52 |

It's been a while since I snowboard, I'm typically not a nuisance... but sometimes people get worked up when they have to board a lift with a snowboarder....

April 7?! Thats so soon

Aspen and Snowmass are scheduled to close April 21, and they will have plenty as March is typically the snowiest month. And end of season specials make it reasonable prices (for Aspen standards at least). But Tahoe area is finally breaking their bad drought pattern this year.

Oh, I was looking at the Kirkwood map..

So bummed about that a-basin partnership ending. Makes sense i suppose, and its probably much better for a-basin.

I mean, I’d take a plane to Sacramento and take a cab or drive
from there, it’s a 37hr drive from my home
!
Plus I don’t have snow tires...

Definitely going to be easy this year to be skiing in April/May. April is basically mid-season at my home resort of Mammoth. They already announced 4th of July closing but the snow is generally best now through end of April. After that it's basically summer skiing and things start winding down. I'm guessing an August closing date is not unlikely though!

Many people are really recomending lake tahoe....
April 21 is kind of a strech for me, but I think it fits on the spring break vacation...

That sounds really intense, at what altitude is Mammoth?

It’s equal here

Avoid Utah. It’s basically either mormons, or bigly discriminatory resorts. Lame.
The closest decent resort to me is Snowshoe in WV. They will probably have another good month of snow. Since it’s in WV, you can bring your cousin and have a blast ! Technically you can bring someone else’s cousin as well, but that’s just not a fun.

Yeah the least welcoming place I’ve border in by far was Park City...

I’m happy it’s over, to be honest. I’m totally in the anti-Vail camp. Rumor has it there’s a keystone/a-basin pass in the works though? I’d buy that.

I just don’t like how they run things, and I’m used to resorts that focus more on the skiing and less on driving up prices and spoiling rich people.
My two other favorite places to ski/board are Snowbird in Salt Lake City and Copper Mountain here. I’m probably a solid blue to easy blacks - I don’t do moguls, I don’t really do trees, and I’m not in it for speed (I have depth perception issues and I break bones easily). Haven’t been to Tahoe though, because the last winter I was out there they didn’t have any snow.
![]() 02/26/2019 at 21:19 |

Kirkwood is not easy but they have three chairs serving groomers so I would be fine taking beginners there.
I bent a ski at Kirkwood on an insane powder day.
![]() 02/26/2019 at 21:21 |
|
Kirkwood is also outside the main Tahoe basin so not as many services. But fewer people...
![]() 02/26/2019 at 21:21 |

Blacks and diamonds are kind of boring on a snowboard, but I like the workout now and then...
![]() 02/26/2019 at 21:22 |

Sounds like exactly the place I’d want to go
![]() 02/26/2019 at 21:23 |

Kirk wood expert runs are steep. They don’t exaggerate. A black diamond run in whitefish is usually harder than any black diamond run at Tahoe.

You can still hike for it!

Too bad you don't sell guns. I could see what happens when I try to cross back into Canada with an AK47 with a drum clip.

Ahh I forget how large your country is sometimes haha. If you're flying anyways, best off going to a mountain closer to an airport. April is still early enough to give you plenty of options. The mountains at Lake Tahoe are easier to access, from either Sacramento or Reno. Salt Lake City mountains should still be open as well and are easy to access via Public transit. I'm not familiar with Colorado but certainly A-Basin I've heard has a great late season and Denver is a cool place either way. Just figure out what else you want to do while here and where flights are cheapest and you can't go wrong. Will be plenty of skiing still in April!
![]() 02/26/2019 at 22:47 |
|
12000 feet at the top or about 3700 km. It's pretty high up which helps the season last long as well. Late late season, it gets pretty mushy in the afternoon and only some of the mountain stays open, but the warm weather and party scene is an experience for sure!

Dont listen the the Utah haters.
O nly two resorts in Utah do not allow snowboarding, Alta & Deer Valley.
Closest resort is 35 mins from my house in downtown SLC and 8 more are within an hour an or so . Most close mid-April, but Snowbird is open anywhere from mid-May til 4th of July depending on the snow conditions.
And if you are a drinker, there are plenty of bars, breweries, and distilleries. But shh.. don’t tell anyone, we don’t need more people here.

This is old but here are my answers
1.
2. see #1
3. all but 2 resorts.
4. depending on the way the snow has been going...at LEAST may, sometimes July.

Im not sure how the predominant religion affects the quality of the skiing or vacationing ...but okay.
